STORY A NEW DISCOVERY
Noah where are you?
Worried he looked up and dropped the wheat that he had been harvesting. He was irritated wondering if Peggy (his younger sister) had bothered him just out of anxiety or was dad really sick this time. He left his job he raced out towards the cottage only to find his fear turned into reality.
His dad had been ill since weeks with some strange kind of viral, his body radiating heat, eyes swollen, he would twist and turn in pain all day and night but no remedy would work on him. The doctor had come and left without much improvement.
Now as he stood next to his fathers bed Noah was lost in his own thoughts remembering the day his dad had come home late from hunting empty handed, he had showed briefly for dinner. Looking so frail and tired he had tried his best to hide his condition. He remembers that look of sadness in his eyes. He thought he must have been upset about the fact that the cultivation had been very less this year and some meat would have acted as a supplement.
A touch awoke him from is dreams, out of his sad thoughts looking down he realized that it was his dad babbling something on and on about the last time he went hunting. Suddenly a word caught his attention “DRAGON”, no no he said female dragon, but how was that possible. Dragons only existed in myths.
Noah:” dad what did you just say, you saw dragons?”
Dad:” no, no that’s what I was just telling you a female dragon who was giving birth to a young one.”
Noah; “but how is that possible, dragons don’t exist”
Dad: “that’s what I had thought too, but they do go look in the shed, you will see the proof yourself.”
Noah: “you brought them home?”[shocked]
Dad: “yes the kid. Were you not listening anything I was saying, you see I think I triggered some kind of a reaction when I saw them. [and then he started to recall what he had seen once again] the last time I was hunting I followed a deer and it took me into the dense part of the forest and then suddenly I heard a strange noise a shriek of some kind but not human, for a moment I got scared and had lost track of the deer by now. I looked around and realized that the shrieks continued, but at a very low voice as if someone was crying in pain. So I followed the sound and what I saw next was beyond any man’s imagination. There in the midst of the forests was a giant female dragon and with her a small baby, like a newly born, uncertain and unaware of the world around him or what he was seeing or feeling. I think the female dragon felt my presence at the same time to because she moved forward and shrieked again and this time it was not out of pain but out of anger towards me for discovering them. Before she could move further or attack me she burned into flames right in front of my eyes out of her weakness or what I don’t understand. And no one was there to look after the baby. ”
Noah: [interrupted before his father could had gone any further] “so you brought it here?”
Dad: “well I couldn’t have just left him there, and I think it’s a baby boy. [Noah started to interrupt again but this time his dad stopped him and said] please promise me to look after him, consider it as a dying man’s wish.”
With this Noah ran towards the shed to make some sense out of what his dad had just said to him.
He opens the door and looked into the dark room everything looked just the same – the hay sack on the floor, the sack of grains on the left. He started to look from left to right, nothing looked out of the usual and he was just turning to go back when a strange noise came out of the far right hand side. Something behind the board was glowing and a very soft low red glow could be seen from his place.
As Noah walked towards the light something moved in the darkness. Soft moaning sounds could be heard, worry set Noah’s pulses on racing. With each careful step he turned into the corner. What confronted his eyes let him dumbstruck and immovable from his place. There in the corner was a little baby dragon, his body red and spiky glowing, a small tail that he was trying to hide behind himself. The look of sadness in his big brown eyes and the hint of tears took Noah’s breath away. He found himself looking straight into the eyes of a baby dragon. In some way he himself felt responsible for his loss and left.
Days had passed on the farm with much happening. When the following day Noah had returned to the house, he found his father dead and him in the midst of all the confusion. But now after weeks of the incident the life had returned to normal, well somewhat.
Every day Noah would get up early and start with the daily course feed the animals of the farm, do the cleaning and cooking etc. he would little come in the way of the baby dragon and as understood Peggy would spend more time with him. Within days the two had come to the terms of feeling a liking for each other. She would play with him, feed him and bath him; she had even named him Jupiter after the planet and the roman god. But something was missing, something that young Peggy couldn’t understand because of her innocence of youth, in Noah and as well as Jupiter (although he is also young yet he could also feel it to). A little would pass between Noah and the Jupiter, one could always see a look of longing in Noah’s eyes and the same look could be seen in Jupiter’s too when he would be around Noah as if sharing Noah’s pain and loss too (a loss of dear one).
After a few days visitors started come and visit the family (now of only two to the rest of the world). Peggy’s friend from the village came to visit her and to invite her to the river for a little fun later. In all the excitement our little Peggy forgot about the presence of little dragon in the house who by now was no more little, with all the proper feeding and caring thanks to Peggy he had turned into quite a fat 5 feet and 8” inches dragon. And hiding him was no more an easy task. This proved out correct when Peggy’s friend was quite taken aback when she saw the shadow of the dragon in the dark and shrieked out of fear thinking some ghost was after her, she ran all the way out of the house and never returned after that. Even a lot of persuading from Peggy couldn’t change it.
The following episode repeated after few days again when Mr. Drake Bell the mayor of the village and his wife Mrs. Drake Bell came to visit the family. They were seated in the living room and were having their tea when they heard strange noises of someone shouting and of lot of things being thrown around in the next room, now what they didn’t know was that our
Poor little Jupiter was locked up in the room for their convenience. Mr. Drake Bell jumped up from his seat, half anger and half frightened and started looking around for the source of this nonsense, at the same time Mrs. Drake Bell had turned all white and was shouting at the top of her voice for help and chanting curses. They had assumed that it was some spirit in the house trying to free itself and in the process of it Mrs. Drake Bell was pulling Peggy towards her and was dragging her out of the house, Noah tried his best to control the situation, he kept telling them that they had assumed it but nothing was enough to convince them. Once outside they warned the family of living in a haunted house and asked them to move out as soon as possible and burn down the house to be rid of the spirit and were gone in not more than five minutes.
The whole episode angered Noah a lot and he didn’t spoke to our little Jupiter for days, this further brought Jupiter down and all he wanted now was to be free and fly high and far, run in fields as fast as he could, growl at night and test his potential. Even as a baby he understood the fact that soon he will have to leave the family as he was bring them loads of trouble. One night while sitting in the barn which has had been his room since he was found their by Noah he was thinking where he will go when he leaves the family, he had heard of a lot of places from Noah in these past days but he had no idea in the world where these places were, thinking of these places and the adventures that awaited him he fell asleep, a good sleep after many a days since the episode with Mr. and Mrs. drake Bell.
While all this was going in the house a lot of action was taking place outside the house as well. In the village, by now everyone had heard of the various accounts by Peggy’s friend and Mr. and Mrs. Drake Bell. Some exaggerated, some manipulated and some even changed for the understanding of the listener and by now everyone was convinced that there is a ghost in the barn and he needs to be hunted for the safety of the village and the two kids living in the house. So that night they gathered to burn down the house at the entrance of the village, carrying with them burning torches, shouting and chanting curses they started marching towards the house. Unaware of all this Noah was sleeping peacefully in his bed when he heard some noises, followed by the smell of something burning and last the glow coming out of the barn. It didn’t took him time to realize that the barn was on fire and thought of poor Jupiter trapped in the barn made him run towards it with all the power and love he had in him. Whatever anger he had it all rushed out of him and the security of his little friend was the only thing on his mind now.
Inside the barn our little baby was sleeping peacefully dreaming his sweet dreams of his adventures that awaited him. And then he started feeling hot, some smoke entered his nose, within seconds he was coughing without even realizing it and when he opened his eyes everything around him was in shades of red and orange. The entire barn was on fire only his corner of the barn and the area around him was left to be galloped up. Panic made him immovable from his place, he knew that he had to escape or he will be roasted here and within seconds he will be dead but the fear had gripped him, he felt something was stopping him from moving making him stay at his place. He had started to loose his consciousness when he heard Noah’s voice call his name.
He listened more carefully this time, yes it was Noah calling him, shouting his name. He had to reach to his guardian and all of a sudden he moved he started looking for place to escape. He had almost made it to the door when it broke and the roof crashed on his head. The hit stilled him to his place, he was loosing his conscious and his eyes started to drop. The last thing he saw before falling down was Noah’s white face with look of worry and he was rushing towards him, to reach out to him.
When he awoke it was already morning and the sun was rising behind the clouds. Jupiter looked around him not understanding where he was or what had happened to him. He saw people moving around him faces that were unknown to him not caring or noticing him and that pungent as if something had been burned alive. And then he remembered it all the smoke, the fire, and Noah and Peggy. Where were they worried he moved his head slowly in the other direction to lookout for them, a pain unbearable crossed though his entire head he closed his eyes momentarily to subside the pain. And when he opened his eyes he saw them sitting in the corner all alone and crying, no one was there to help them or to talk to them. Noah was shouting at the people, calling them names, calling them murderers. But no one was paying any attention to him they were throwing some fluid at him and at the area around them.
This time Jupiter understood what was happening, they were going to burn Noah and Peggy alive just like they thought they had killed him too. And all he needed was some time to frame a plan to save his family; no one was bothering with him because they assumed him dead. Thinking is no good an idea when you see your family being burned alive and that was the situation with our Jupiter also. No plan or idea would come to him and after a point he gave up and jumped and roared at the top of his voice as he saw the villagers setting up fire near Noah and Peggy.
Surprised and shocked villagers all looked around and saw him. And now their entire attention was at the dragon that was growling and pacing at them like some angry lion that was waiting for the right chance and would pounce at its prey. Suddenly the dragon leaped into the air, his wings so huge and big that in one flap he could blow away trees together, and his tale long and spiky following his immense body. He growled and this time every one got a good glimpse of his sharp teeth and paws no more hidden to anybody. Many shrieked and many ran only a few were rooted at their place, out of bravery or fear unknown. He flew high into the sky and took two rounds around the house and the burned barn as if claiming its territory. He growled again and this time with the thunder of his voice came a ball of fire big enough to burn down the entire village in one blow And now he came down towards Peggy and Noah who were also surprised like the villagers but their was a happy smile that touched their faces. Slowly he came down towards them and came to a rest right in front of them. Whatever fire had been caught up in this time died a death due to the flapping of Jupiter’s wings. Sitting down he looks directly at Mr. Drake bell that hadn’t moved from his place since Jupiter had made his grand entry and had made everybody aware of his presence. He was pointing between Noah and Drake Bell to indicate to the elderly to free Noah and Peggy. For some time Mr. Drake Bell kept looking between the dragon and Noah not understanding what was happening, all his wisdom and understanding and experience of years had vanished in one go. And then slowly it dawned to him that the dragon was asking him to release the family, his family.
He moved quickly and freed first Noah and then Peggy, he was just taking a step back when the dragon growled at him and blocked his way as if to indicate any step would endanger his life. Angry as he was Jupiter now moved towards the villagers now to avenge them for all he had lost, angry and consumed to the core he was growling at them, fire burned in his eyes as he looked at them. In one mouthful he could swallow a man easily or may be two. He had just taken a step towards them when Noah called his name but the dragon didn’t respond, and twice Noah called but nothing happed. The dragon was still moving not listening or caring.
He was just about to strike a villager when Noah called his name again and this time with all his might and love he had for him and the dragon stopped, right in his tracks where he was as if something had called him back, as if someone had saved him. Slowly he turned his head and looked back Noah, shaking his head slightly he moved back towards him and settled himself next to him. He was all calm and peaceful now and the expressions on his face were so relaxed as if nothing had happened.
What happened next was all a blur to our Jupiter because after all his bravery and appearance he was tired and he slept for hours together. During this time a lot of major discussions took place in the village between the mayor and Noah. First the safety of the village was ensured which meant that the dragon cannot live in the village but he can live in the forest as freely as he feel. Next the dragon can visit the family but it was agreed that he would not appear in front of anyone or scare them. He would not cattle of the village but can hunt in the forest. A few more rules were set and poor Jupiter was free to live. For years together the three of them lived together like this and were very happy and content, even after all these years the wish for an adventure had not died a death in his heart. So one day when Noah went to visit him he was not there or even anywhere near by. Noah understood where his little friend had gone to and just smiled for him.
